Before you run ads: set up conversion tracking (the simple version)

Ads without tracking means guessing which money worked. A plain-language setup for Meta and Google before you spend.

Before you run ads: set up conversion tracking (the simple version)

If you run ads without reliable tracking, you can see how much you spent but not what it brought back. The ad platforms then optimise for the wrong things, and you end up judging campaigns by gut feeling. Setting up tracking first takes a day or two and saves a lot of wasted budget.

This is a simplified version of how I approach it. It isn’t every technical detail, but it covers what most small businesses need.

1. Decide what counts as a result

Before touching any code, write down the actions that matter:

  • Stores: purchase (with value), add to cart, begin checkout.
  • Services: form submitted, WhatsApp click, phone call click, booking made.

Pick one main conversion. That’s what you’ll ask the ad platforms to optimise for.

2. Install the basics

  • Google Analytics 4 for overall traffic and behaviour.
  • Meta Pixel if you’ll run Facebook or Instagram ads.
  • Google Ads conversion tag if you’ll run Google Ads (or import conversions from GA4).

Shopify and WooCommerce both have official integrations that handle the standard e-commerce events. Use them rather than pasting code into random places, and make sure each tag is installed once.

3. Track the actions that aren’t purchases

Form submissions, WhatsApp clicks and phone clicks often need extra setup. Track a form only when it’s successfully sent (the thank-you message or page), not when the button is clicked, or failed submissions will count too.

4. Add server-side events where it helps

Browser tracking misses some conversions because of ad blockers and privacy settings. Meta’s Conversions API and similar options send events from your server as well. Many platforms offer this through official integrations; if you use both browser and server events, set them up to avoid counting the same purchase twice.

5. Test with a real conversion

Place a real test order (then cancel or refund it), submit your form and click your WhatsApp button. Then check, in each platform’s test or debug view:

  • Did the event arrive?
  • Was the value and currency correct?
  • Did it arrive once, not twice?

This step is skipped surprisingly often, and it’s where most problems show up.

6. Use UTM tags on links you control

Add UTM parameters to links in emails, bios and partner posts, so your analytics can tell where visitors came from. Keep a simple naming system and use it consistently.

7. Respect privacy

Explain in your privacy policy what you track and why, and follow the consent rules that apply to your customers. Don’t send personal details like names or phone numbers to ad platforms in plain text.

8. Check the numbers weekly

Compare orders in your store or leads in your inbox with what the platforms report. They will never match exactly, but big gaps mean something is broken. Fix tracking before raising budgets.

Before-ads checklist

  1. One main conversion chosen.
  2. GA4, Meta Pixel and Google tags installed once, via official integrations where possible.
  3. Forms and WhatsApp clicks tracked on success.
  4. Test conversions verified in each platform.
  5. UTMs on links you control.
  6. Privacy policy updated.

Tracking is one part of being ready for ads; the rest is a site that works when people arrive. My store launch checklist covers both. If you’d like help setting up tracking properly, let’s talk.
